Other Plan Benefits

The Trust offers participants several supplementary coverage options beyond the comprehensive health and wellness benefits.

Additional benefits for active participants.

The Washington Teamsters Welfare Trust offers comprehensive coverage to thousands of participants, including Life Insurance, Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance, Time Loss Benefits and Disability Waivers.

Life & AD&D Insurance Benefits

The Trust offers a variety of group Life Insurance and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) plans. Your bargaining unit must have negotiated one of the plans in order for you to have this coverage.

Please refer to your collective bargaining agreement or call Northwest Administrators at (800) 458-3053 to see if you have Life and AD&D coverage and the details of your particular plan.

Employee Life Insurance—The employee life insurance benefit ranges from $5,000 – $30,000 depending on your plan. This amount will be paid to your beneficiary in the event of your death.

Dependent Life Insurance—The spouse or other eligible dependent benefit is $500 – $3,000 depending on your plan. This amount will be paid to you in the event of your child or spouse’s death from any cause.

Employee Accidental Death or Dismemberment—This benefit ranges from $5,000 – $30,000 depending on your plan and is payable to your beneficiary in the event of your death, or to you in the event of a qualifying dismemberment loss, if your death or loss is caused by an accidental injury while you are covered under the plan.

Time Loss Benefits

If you are disabled due to a non-work-related injury or illness and cannot work, you may be eligible for weekly time loss (or short-term) disability benefits ranging from $100 to $500 per week (less Social Security taxes) depending on your plan. There is a maximum benefit of 26 times the weekly amount.

Only participants whose bargaining unit has negotiated these benefits have coverage. Please refer to your collective bargaining agreement or log in to www.nwadmin.com to see if you have Time Loss benefits and to see the details of your plan.

To qualify for Time Loss payments, you must:

  • Become disabled in a month for which you have eligibility based on an employer contribution for this coverage, or if you have returned to covered work, for which you have eligibility based on a disability waiver of contributions due to a prior disability, and

  • Be unable to perform the normal duties of your occupation because of a disability due to a covered accidental injury or sickness (including pregnancy and its complications), and

  • Be under a physician’s regular care for the covered accidental injury or sickness, and

  • Not engage in any occupation for wage or profit, though some exceptions may apply.

Your benefit is payable starting the first day for disabilities resulting from an accidental injury or medically necessary surgery or the eighth day for disabilities due to an illness but will not begin before your first physician’s visit. Written certification of your disability and beginning date is required, along with an application.

Unless you are under a physician’s care, you will not be considered disabled; your first day of disability for purposes of the accidental injury or sickness disability qualification period will not be before the date you first visit the physician.

Disability Waivers

If you are unable to work due to an on- or off-the-job injury, you may be eligible for a disability waiver, which would allow you to maintain your benefits but not require you to pay a monthly COBRA premium for a period of time.

All of the medical, dental, and vision plans include three monthly waivers for each disability, but your bargaining unit may have negotiated an additional nine months of medical plan waivers. Please refer to your collective bargaining agreement or log in to www.nwadmin.com to see the details of your plan and if you have the additional nine months of medical disability waivers.

If you are disabled from your work and have submitted proof of the disability from your physician and employer, you may receive a waiver of contributions for up to three months if you remain disabled from your work during that time. The waiver period will begin on the first of the month following the month your employer’s paid coverage ends. This waiver allows continuation of any of the following coverage that you have under the Trust:

  • Medical/prescription

  • Vision

  • Dental

  • Life/AD&D

Certain employer groups have negotiated an additional nine months of medical waivers (12 months total). For these groups, the waiver of contributions for months four through twelve applies to medical and prescription coverage only (and if covered, life and AD&D coverage) and do not include vision, dental or Time Loss coverage.

At the conclusion of the waiver period, you may elect COBRA and begin making COBRA self- payments, but your combined continuation coverage under the waiver period and COBRA may not exceed 18 months (29 months if you are disabled and qualify for the COBRA Disability extension).
